Re: Idiots at Valve too stupid to understand hardware

Alternatively - once Gabe realized that in order to do hardware they would have to hire a bunch 50K machinists and managers for those machinists, and electrical engineers and QA and whatever else makes up those 1000 people at MS that are working on the new Xbox, he realized they didn't want to do hardware and axed the department.
Ha, possibly. I am biased because a good friend of mine is a machinist and because when I worked at some placed that made chips, the machinists and board techs were never pricks (unlike a lot of the pure-software people) and genuinely good people. But there seems to be this belief that a person who could make a control panel is going to be raping children out on the docks of Valve. (I assume they have docks.) Being able to do metal crafting is inherently cool. I'd want that where I work now and we do nothing remotely requiring hardware! I would imagine that this clique of people at Valve can tediously quote every Star Trek episode at length, but the part where the ST crew gets its ass saved by having a diverse lineup of races, cultures and knowledge was completely lost on them. They'd be flipping tables at the thought of one person working there who knew how to solder if they had the upper body strength to flip a table. ICJ
