The problem with Anita's videos: not enough IMHOs?

She did it this time with Ico. She says, "In the most decidedly patronizing examples..." but nobody has "decided" anything like that. It's her stupid opinion. And experiencing Ico for the first time when it was a new release, Ico holding Yorda by the hand was awesome. There was no UI. It was a game about two dumb kids who had each other and nothing else. For her to go TROPE TROPE TROPE at it makes her look like the asshole, not the people who made Ico.
Something can be enjoyable and patronizing at the same time. I think she tried to make that point early in the video, though she used the word "problematic" to do it, so anyone familiar with internet discourse would be forgiven for mentally shooting that entire sentence through the tiny basketball hoop on their brain's circular file.
Over the course of this series I will be offering critical analysis of many popular games and characters, but please keep in mind that it’s both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy a piece of media while also being critical of it’s more problematic or pernicious aspects.
Anyway, I think she's fully qualified to decide what she finds patronizing for herself. And even if you don't agree, it's not like Fumito Ueda and his team DON'T have a reputation as loveably sexist Japanese stereotypes, so she's got that whole bullshit wisdom of crowds thing in her corner, too. Here's a great piece of trivia that came out of a Team Ico presentation from TGS 2010. It's about The Last Guardian, the spiritual successor to Ico that's going to finally make owning a PS3 worthwhile:
Early in development, the main character in The Last Guardian was female, but the team ended up going with a boy. The reason: they thought it would be more realistic that he would have enough grip strength to be able to climb around, and because they wouldn't have to worry about camera angles with a girl who wears a skirt.
Some statements are so perfectly patronizing to women, the only possible response is a high five. Those statements get a free pass, whether they take the form of awesome video games or just literal statements. It's the next ten worthless assholes who jump up to say the same thing only much, much less cleverly that deserve to get Sarkeesian'd with a twenty-five minute long black rubber Sarkeesian.
