Re: That's part of it

The metagame is the way it is because it's the Nash equilibrium of positioning tradeoffs. Breaking it creates an imbalance for both teams, and making that imbalance work to your team's advantage requires strategy beyond what a group of five random people is usually capable of exerting. You'll see a team break it far more often at the beginner and pro level than anywhere else because the beginners don't know what they're doing, and because the pros do.
That's the theory I have why anyone ever picks Caitlyn. Pros can make it work because they can maximize her slight range advantage and end the match before any late game kicks in where Caitlyn really chokes compared to other carries. Everyone else sees the pros do this, figures they can do the same, and choke when the game stretches into 40 minutes and Caitlyn gets dominated by any carry with a steroid. Reading Creexuls WoW experiences it seems like every online game group always has someone's bossy girlfriend who tries to give orders while being the worst player of the bunch. Ours only ever played Soraka and Morgana (them dames love their support characters) and would constantly spam starfall against minions to both steal minion kills from the carry, push the lane, and be completely out of mana when jumped by the enemy jungler. She'd always insist on grouping up at the 10 minute mark no matter what and would always be the first to die figuring Soraka should be out front poking the enemy team to death with starfall, blaming everyone else for being out of position when she died. Would play Morgana exactly the opposite and wrong way: hanging out the back using the shield like a heal and only using her ult if a single enemy broke off and started attacking her. Every 0-10-2 loss was because everyone wasn't listening to her enough and following her master plan of turret standoffs and walking into jungle ambushes. God help you if you didn't follow the META during champion pick while she was around (during casual after work games where half the team was drunk anyway).
