Re: Why was GoldenEye so good?

Creexul speaking of GoldenEye again and yesterday's release of a new Timesplitters made me think about GoldenEye again, and how I loved it. GoldenEye on the N64 was crazy good. Next Generation (Magazine and Online) gave it huge praise, as did everyone who played it. I played through 80% of the game in "00 Agent" difficulty, which means that you can only get hit like twice. I loved every second of it, no matter how difficult it got, and even going back to complete levels within time limits to unlock extras. Then after the single player game was finished, we played 4-player death match, carry the briefcase, golden gun, and flag tag. We played it till our fingers bled (was the summer of '69). Looking back, though, I can't remember why I loved it. Was it just the first of the "smart" FPSs? Why did I get bored of the developer's sequel, Perfect Dark? I'm no James Bond fan, so it's not that I care for Pierce. I played a little of TimeSplitters and lots of TimeSplitters 2 -- which had a very GoldenEye feeling 4-player split screen -- and it still failed to capture my interest the way GoldenEye once did. Far Cry gave me the closest feeling to playing GoldenEye since 1997. I think it was the stiff difficulty, and how I would replay one difficult section several times, each time changing my tactics, getting better or worse results, and continuing to enjoy each reload. Anyway, I guess I have to wait for Jhoh to come home from school to learn more about why he thinks GoldenEye would still be a viable game today.
Sorry, drawing a blank. I haven't GONE to school today yet, though. Maybe I should do that first.
