Gas Powered Games' Wildman
I don't put money into these even though I really want to help stuff like Shadowrun get made, I just don't preorder shit unless I'm going to get immediate access to it. I noticed basically my bar is high enough that the stuff I'd put money into goes way over target anyway. However this thing is exposing something that was kind of obvious even before Kickstarter, and that is that game company executives fucking suck at business. Most of them failed out of more competitive fields or are game devs who get replaced on their own projects by better game devs, so we're really dealing with the worst of the useless. At some point I'll probably make an argument about why Feargus Urquhart is the real poster boy of bad game executives, but today let's look at this horseshit: Chris Taylor posted a rushed, halfhearted $1.2M kickstarter because his game company sucks and got dropped from the unprofitable Age of Empires Online by Microsoft. They're on their way through development of this other game and are about as close to done as Curt Schilling's MMO was. Big million-dollar-plus kickstarters need to raise a huge fraction of their goal in the first day or two, because very few of them raise wire to wire like Tim Schaefer's did. The normal shape of the fundraising is high only at the start and end. Three or four days later he's got 1/6th of what he needs and that's probably the end of that. Shameless and unafraid to admit to the world he sucks at business, he lays off his whole company and asks for the rest of the money anyway in this begging video. You see he'd banked the development of Wildman on the income from AoEO and when it got cut off he didn't even have enough cushion/credit to keep his people paid through the end of this month. Look at this: It's a fucking parade of games that weren't that good to begin with. In fact they get worse as they got more ambitious so probably this guy needs to go back to making shit in his basement and then he can put it on Desura. Now trust me with a million dollars! he begs, I only barely know the first thing about managing it!
