Re: I am shocked and appalled at what I'm reading here.

So just about anyone who can figure out how to push a car around can get a class C license, that allows the holder to drive anything weighing under 26,001 pounds, which includes anything up to a good-sized box truck.
It took me three years of restricted driving (one year of which required a fully-licensed co-driver), a knowledge test, and two separate road tests to earn my first driver's license. What kind of stoneage libertarian dystopia are you cavemen living in?!
When I got my license at 17 (in California), which would have been back in 1978 you basically got a learner's permit and with a licensed driver you could then get road practice. My mother paid for me to get driving lessons, and I passed. In those days, you passed, you got your license and you were now a licensed driver. When I took the written test the first time I had studied for it and missed one question. Four years later I went in person to renew my license I had to take the written test again - if I had renewed it by mail I wouldn't have had to - and that time, taking the test cold, I got all 20 questions right. You're also in Canada; they may have more restrictive rules there. I've heard some people who live in really tough countries in the E.U. like Germany and Sweden will arrange to move to a different country where the requirement to get a license is less restrictive, since, like in the U.S., every state in the E.U. has to honor ever other state's driver's license. And that's not a mistake on my part; the technical term for countries is "states." It just happens that the U.S. also uses the same word for its political subdivisions; a lot of countries use Province or Prefect to mean the same thing.
