Unfortunately no one can experience Thief at its best with modern hardware.
1920x1080 graphics with bloom is nifty and all, but Thief was the poster child for the Aureal 3D sound cards. ICJ gushes over space giraffe being a game you play more by sound than sight, but I'd say Thief 1&2 using A3D were that even moreso. Yeah, the player would be sitting still in a shadow looking at some faint brick texture, but at the same time they'd be aurally working out a mental picture of the groaning zombie's patrol route. If you were screwing around with a picked lock and that NASA sound technology told you with pinpoint accuracy that a door was opening behind you and around the corner you'd jump 6 feet before scrambling to the best hiding spot. Now I play it with Audacity or Open AL and it just sounds like I'm playing in a tile bathroom. Fucking Creative and their shitty inferior EAX. I seriously looked into buying an old Vortex 2 sound card for this current PC, but sadly there are no drivers for it compatible with windows 7. THERE's a fan patch that needs to happen.
