Re: What points do you disagree with?
Portugal decriminalized, they did not legalize. The shadow economy based on drug rents persists with a very modest demand attenuation. The incentives that birth cartels and displace societal destabilization into supply countries remain intact. Ultimately, drugs are a zero sum scourge. Either the third world producers suffer from cartel-induced erosion of the rule of law, or first world consumers suffer from addiction. Whatever the price per lb of coke/heroin is in a legalization scenario, it will still be 2-3 orders of magnitude cheaper than it is right now. Maybe coca production won't scale as well as tea... OK, settle for a 1000% premium on tea... you're still left at $150 a lb. As for the violence suffered by rentiers, I don't really care. I think our current system works pretty well. The most pathological personalities in our society sacrifice themselves to fuel a relatively cheap, 100% onshored penal system. Regardless, these men have no place in society. You will never train some gangbanging teardropped orc to write javascript. The only jobs they're fit for - back of house food service/construction/unskilled resource cycle/farm labor- are 90% filled by a caste of skilled illegals that are never leaving this country. Likewise, the secondary sector that could have absorbed these guys went across the Pacific. We've lot over a third of our manufacturing volume since the 80s, and the stuff that is dribbling back is ultra value added and the people qualified to do that work make more than many professionals. As for DV and murders, the correlation is quite clear. As it becomes easier for women to exit marriages and enter a stable alternative situation, DV declines. When DV declines, domestic homicides go down. I see no reason why this trend will ever be reversed, especially as women outpace men in postsecondary attainment and career outcomes. As for stopping mass killings, of course it's a sci fi fantasy. That's the entire point...
