In general the best way to get help as a summon is to find someone else (VIA THE CALTROPS GROUP, EVEN) who has the game and ask them if they have someone in your level range who can get there. What usually ends up happening is that they'll patiently lay down their sign, someone else's will show up instead, and you'll beat the boss without them. Never fails. Once you coordinate with someone, though, at least you know for sure that someone is there waiting to be summoned, and they can likely drop you some humanity as when you near the end game it becomes a pretty easy renewable resource. Also, joining the forest covenant is a great way to get rid of hangups with PvP, as every single encounter there is purposefully unbalanced, you lose most of the time, but it's so fast-paced and chaotic (no level restrictions, up to 3 invaders, up to 2 summons, and so on) that you can't get bent out of shape about it as easily. Most times when people get frustrated with this it's because they are trying to get help for Ornstein and Smough and instead getting invaded. It's kind of a nexus for PvP as well as a place where most people want a hand, so it's self-reinforcing in terms of an online population. Sucks for you, though, as someone just trying to get by. The other areas are the burg and the parish where levels are predictable and gankers thrive. I do theme invasions from time to time in both places with my soul level 1 character but honestly only a few people seemed to do anything but panic these days, so I just drop humanity and get out.
