Re: Um

This "game-breaking" tower you're describing is only available at the ends of rounds, once you've made enough money to not only upgrade the archer towers to their highest level but also to buy extra buffs for those towers. The archer towers suck at first so you do have to make decisions about what non-shitty towers you're going to pair them with. It seems like there's a lot of game between the beginnings of rounds and the ends of rounds. You actually have to survive long enough to buy those towers.
What's a non-shitty tower compared to archers? Magic towers aren't cost effective against anything but medium or higher armored foes (too much wasted damage nuking a single target), barracks don't do damage, and there aren't enough grouped up enemies for artillery. Not only are archer towers the best value, you can juggle them anywhere since there's no upgrade time and have a 90% resale value. Starting halfway through the campaign you have enough first wave money to get a ranger tower. One of those with militia blocking is more useful than half a dozen first level towers. Artillery just plain sucks until you upgrade it to max level with the cluster shot upgrade, and even then it's not worth the money. Upgrading the meteor spell between rounds is a better substitute.
The mage tower is also game-breaking if you want to look at it that way: there's a buff where you can make them teleport guys backwards, so if you had a long line of those towers, no one would ever get through. But they're also expensive, the meat of the game is surviving long enough to buy that towers that win the rounds.
They can only teleport a certain number of guys on a 16 second cooldown. They can and will be overwhelmed. The rangers' thorn spell hits everyone. Magic towers fall under the same category as the laser towers in Defense Grid: they're theoretically better suited for taking out certain kinds of enemies better than the base guns, but as the game goes on it keeps introducing so many enemies resistant to them that they're not really worth it anymore. The only real use for mage towers was using the curse wizard to halve the armor of guys right before a gauntlet of archer towers.
