Re: #2 - GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS 2
Of all the space 4X games ever made, the one MOST suitable to a lover of Civilization 2 is: GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS 2! The mechanics and "feel" of GC2 seem <s>copied</s> honed specifically for the tastes of fans of that earlier, Earthbound game! To wit: The galactic map has no "star lanes", it's just a giant board with squares that you can move your ships onto. All of the ol' 4X favorites are there, including building, research, combat, diplomacy, <s>Wonders of the World</s> Galactic Wonders, and all that noise! Combat is square-on-square violence, with all the ridiculous stacking you can muster. There is no tactical combat. Of course, being in SPACE comes with some limitations: Instead of choosing arbitrarily where to put your cities, you're stuck with whatever planets are available. And while the Civ2 map is littered with a wide variety of different crazy resources to control, such as cows, resources in the space map are fewer and much further between, which leads to them also being subsequently more important. The race for resources is no laughing matter, friend! Such as cows! One memorable thing is the diplomacy is done as well as I've ever seen it, meaning there's no bullshit. Offers are made on the offer screen, I'll give you this if you give me that, and you know if they're going to accept the offer before you offer it because the thing turns green. No guessing if you're getting the best offer, slide that money slide over until the goddamn thing turns green, and you're golden! Be sure to get the Twilight of the Arnor expansion, which allows you to play as all the other races, each with their own specialized UI to give it that extra flavor you demand! (You could only be humans until this update, which had so much updated/new stuff that it sort of made the case for being GalCiv 2.5, or even 3. Regardless, don't settle for less.) Except I lied earlier! You CAN put "cities" wherever you want, later on, because you can build "space stations". These are floating cities that while they do not support populations or build ships, nonetheless can provide a wide variety of benefits to your Galactic Civilization 2! These can be area-of-effect benefits such as adding power or defense to any ships/colonies in the area, or you can just build GIANT GODDAMN SPACE HOTEL/CASINO RESORTS! Not feeling particularly violent? Just take over the universe by building so many goddamn SPACE VACATION TIMESHARES and AWFUL REALITY TELEVISION BROADCASTING NODES that people just naturally realize your civilization is the best and jump ship to get on the winning team! Or you can fucking blow up every goddamn star on the map. THE GALAXY IS YOURS TO BEFOUL!
