Re: Have you seen Babylon 5 yet?

Saw the first season. The acting nearly sunk it right there. Shelved it until I could forget how bad the acting was and return to the show, but it's in that uncomfortable niche of 'old color tv' that's too badly outdone by modern video and not old enough to have the strange charm of black and white so I'll probably take it in small doses. The first season is extremely wooden, mind.
I completely agree. That's why I took the time advising you to muscle through season 1, as weak as it is in the acting department. And clearly you didn't make it to the Season 1 finale, because everything you were wanting out of the Trek franchise in this thread is delivered by Babylon 5. Much like your precious "books," Babylon 5 was written long-form from Season 1-4 so it's a plot with major payouts over time. This is why you can't skip season 1. Even the filler episodes put a twist on long-standing sci fi genre tropes. As for Wittgenstein's spoiler-riffic complaint (asshole), I'd say that this is the risk anyone takes when slipping into horror territory: that the revelation of some lurking threat can never compare to the fears at the back of the viewer/reader's mind It will inevitably be a disappointment.
One of Lovecraft’s worst faults is his incessant effort to work up the expectations of the reader by sprinkling his stories with such adjectives as ‘horrible,’ ‘terrible,’ ‘frightful,’ ‘awesome,’ ‘eerie,’ ‘weird,’ ‘forbidden,’ ‘unhallowed,’ ‘unholy,’ ‘blasphemous,’ ‘hellish,’ and ‘infernal.’ Surely one of the primary rules for writing an effective tale of horror is never to use any of these words—especially if you are going, at the end, to produce an invisible whistling octopus.
In a way that's what was genius about John Carpenter's "The Thing" because even though the monster had been revealed once, you never knew what it was going to look like next.
