Re: Lady married to famous man raises 1.2 million, asks for slave labor.
I like how Palmer can't really justify this other than to say she used to hold free concerts. I had also forgotten how insufferable music blogs are since every one posts minute-by-minute updates but acts like it's totally above this all.
I saw a breakdown about where the money went a while ago, and most everything in it was absurdly inefficient, including paying people to take care of spending the money itself, which seems like a crazy moebius strip of waste.
The breakdown is on her blog and what gets me is not even the waste, it's how this request shows how little Palmer actually thinks of musicians.
PLUS we have to factor in about $15-20k to pay our design team to actually design all this stuff, and to make it super-duper amazing and worth your money. those of you who supported mine and Neil’s last Kickstarter know what i’m talking about here. this CD is gonna be a super-deluxxxxxe work of art. if we sell about 100 turntable packages: ordering the tables, paying the artists to paint them, shipping all that stuff around: ballpark another $15k. i have to pay the VISUAL artists who joined this amazing art party. i commissioned them all to paint their art, they own it. i’m only BORROWING the art for the art gallery tour — and using the “likeness” (the digital copy) for the album/book/etc. packaging – and then returning the art to the artist to keep. still, i paid them all. add another $20-25k there. i feel very good about giving them all that money.
She feels good about giving them money to visual artists and designers but wants her goddamn musicians to play for free. That blog post was written before she got her cash and assumed she got 1 million dollars. She got 1.2 million and still can't spare 35K. Maybe it makes sense in some weird way, since even a brief look at her output seems to peg her bigger on visuals and style than the actual music. The latest update has her talking about how she hit a cultural nerve and resisted the trolls or whatever. My favorite bit is when she states that NPR is the place that best understands her.
