Do he like his oatmeal lumpy?

The first 20 minutes are a complete waste of time. So I thought! When "all hell breaks loose" the fact that I had been lulled into boredom and thinking of downloading this "Gish" phenomenon really came into play and shocked the shit out of me. I was leaning back in my chair, feet up on the desk, barely aware of what keys I had mapped to what actions. Then the scientist guy sort of limped to the left like his leg was broken (it was supposed to look like a fit or a convulsion) -- he looked like M.C. Hammer on crack, mostly -- and he sat there pounding the crap out of me because I hadn't played a first person shooter for any real length of time since January, and even then that was 'The Thing' for the PS2 and I don't have the keyboard and Expert Mouse 8.0 mod for the PS2. (I did have a fake gun, though, so I was able to empty it into him and keep playing in short order.) Only a couple hours in total, but what a great fucking game so far. There have been a lot of advancements made in shooters since Quake III, but I like that Doom III doesn't care about any of them. If there has been a creepy, corridor zombie game I haven't played it, therefore this is all fresh to me. Yes, it's dark, but I can't recall any other game embracing the darkness so well or looking so good when doing it. For instance, I couldn't get past the opening of Deus Ex for the longest time because I couldn't see a goddamn thing. Deus Ex didn't even bother to give me a flashlight or the ability to take off J.C.'s shades. And the people who came up with everything about the zombies are the most talented artists in the world. The eyes that don't go dark when they're dead but rather are two little pinpoints of evil that remain there scowling at you is the single best horror effect in any video game I've ever played. the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
