I'm fine with pragmatism. If TDARCOS was just being pragmatic, I wouldn't care (I've already stated as much). It's the touting of some radically halfass method as somehow being better than one of the numerous correct approaches that gets in my craw.
just the fact that he gives a shit about pointers and linked lists indicates he's got a higher ceiling than about 80% of the people I've ever worked with, including me probably because it looks like he went to school for it here's the thing: I don't actually know what data structure is faster on a given language or compiler without looking it up or asking on irc, ever, and even if I did I haven't used pascal or whatever since 1984 so for all I know he's found the sweet spot between speed of execution and ease of maintenance for his project. I looked at his posts and saw he was using languages I was taught at age 8 and have never used since. if he did that for a company, maybe his project isn't great for a team of 10 guys to maintain over a long period of time, but as long as he's writing it in these old languages there aren't 10 people in the world who will ever give a shit, the next person that even looks at the code will do so because he's been hired to rip it out and rewrite the whole project in java. here's my optimization method: 1. write it in python probably 2. which part is too slow? 3. rewrite that part in c as punishment
