There were a ton of those in KQV

also KQV had a puzzle (throwing a shoe at a cat) that you could "solve" with the wrong shoe, which made the game unbeatable and which you only discovered later on, by which point you had probably overwritten the old save Flexibility!
I didn't even know about this one! Here are a ton of others: - Going by the inn a 2nd time and not having the boot. The cat eats the rat with no apparent consequences. It is now impossible for you to escape being captured by the thieves. There is no hint given whatsoever that you needed the rat alive to save you. - Exiting the treasure vault without picking up the gold coin, the one specific gold coin you can pick up that blends in with the thousands of other gold coins you cannot pick up. - Paying for the pie with the gold coin instead of the silver dime. - Eating the pie. - FUCK THE MAZE. Impossible to map out because the intersections would change based on which direction you came from, to simulate your perspective despite giving no indication of this. This would not be outdone for shitty mazes until 1999's Vagrant Story, neither of which were as bad as the mazes in Gologo 13. Has there ever been a game maze that hasn't completely sucked? The only reason I ever played Kings Quest V was it was the very first (bootleg) game we got for our brand new 286 and the jump from C64/NES graphics was mind blowing. In retrospect I think it was for people in a similar situation who thought Space Quest was too bawdy, Police Quest too gritty, and Hero Quest too exciting. The adventure genre started dying as soon as hardware allowed other genres to catch up in graphic quality (genres where number crunching was going on), with the nail in the coffin being their decision to jump on the 90s FMV bandwagon.
