BioWare came to Interplay pitching an MMORTS called Battleground: Infinity
Interplay wasn't interested, but saw potential in the tech demo for BioWare's real-time, multi-player "Infinity Engine". So they hired BioWare - who at that point were known only for the mediocre MechWarrior clone, Shattered Steel - to produce a Fallout-style RPG based on the Dungeons & Dragons license. How much influence Interplay had after that is a matter of some debate. Oh, and this came out in a GDC panel a couple years ago:
Other tidbits from the panel include how the aforementioned Battleground Infinity tech demo was, in reality, just a DirectX3 tech demo that originally had asteroids crashing into each other -- but completely reskinned with monsters substituting for said asteroids.
