I liked this one
Usually I can't stand these kind of Dominion-like games. Race to the Galaxy was tolerated, but mostly for the art and the fact that it was so short. Age of Wonders is actually enjoyable and renders the rest obsolete.
This is is kind of fun because there's no CLEAR winning strategy (that we've found)
Either go for every single blue victory point card you can (they take priority over everything, even seemingly great long term infrastructure investments) or go science. Go all out science or don't bother at all, and hope that no one else does the same, stealing the cards you wanted. Sometimes the "score victory points for every X card neighbor has" will be the best play. The rest is just getting lucky that your neighbors don't bother with military. Usually not worth investing a ton into, maybe one card per round just to keep up or one point ahead.
Another downside is that the cards just have icons on them telling you what they do, so that's fine if it's a big 7 with a gold coin next to it (you earn 7 gold coins), but some of them are one-offs that make no sense. A triangle with a purple swatch next to it? A gray swatch with an X through it? The rulebook explains each one but it can cause some confusion. Even for experienced players it's almost impossible to tell how well you are doing compared to the other players until you add up scores at the end, just because there's so many different ways to accumulate victory points.
The reference sheet is definitely a must. It's worth playing. The "pass the hands to the left" system is pretty neat because you never know what cards you'll have next turn. The art is truly magnificent so that helps make it more fun somehow. Because every game takes 21 turns and each turn is "pick a card from your hand", it goes pretty fast. Positive.
