Re: Time for anecdotal data!

Sure. I have known homeless aboriginals who likely had FAS and who had been drinking to unconsciousness as pre-teens. Their condition was not meaningfully comparable to the functional alcoholic who maintains at least the semblance of a life outside of getting drunk.
So between people drinking 24/7 who now have more alcohol than blood, and you, who once drank to the point of getting your stomach pumped like it was the prom, can you imagine that there is a full spectrum of alcohol dependency? Maybe your case wasn't the baseline and the aboriginals are outliers to be ignored. (As a side note, the functional alcoholics seem to be ultimately the worst cases because they don't hit bottom quickly, they build a whole life around drinking. No wake up calls.)
But I don't see how their free will wouldn't be an essential part of recovering.
An alcoholic willing to get better is of course a part of treating alcoholism, and then at that point, the medical profession has decided to treat it like a disease, much to your dismay. Is this the main part of your beef with the "disease" thing? Because patient compliance is actually a big part of treating every disease.
