The scariest moment in FEAR...
...is the first time you get a good look at your dynamic shadow. "Wait, are those... shoulder pads? WHAT THE FUCK AM I WEARING?!"
It's also funny to see how comically shitty level design used to be, walking around warehouses with absurd layouts with tool chests and sawhorses randomly scattered in hallways because someone thought that seemed warehousey.
I would argue the level design is actually fantastic, though clearly dictated by the needs of the AI. You'll notice every "room" is actually more like an arena, usually containing concentric circles of cover and concealment. This encourages you to mix it up with the enemies (rather than hang back and pick them off), and it also gives them more opportunities for flanking actions. The fact that someone tried to camouflage these game spaces as real working environments is just the hilarious icing on the cake. FEAR 2 clearly tried to address criticisms of the first game by including more varied and "convincing" (easily navigable non-circular) rooms, which just gave rise to a host of new complaints about "dumbed-down" AI. If you're listening, Monolith, here's my solution for FEAR 4: haunted paintball facility. You're welcome.
