Tried Exodus
Group consensus: a resounding "eh" It's pretty much on par with Pegasus with three-quarters of the game being awful or ignorable, and one-quarter being theoretical improvements but not working in practice.
I'd say the expansions are well worth it, most notably Exodus which adds the vital pilot captain job, makes space combat exponentially more interesting by giving the cylon enemy fleet persistence over time (so it's a problem that must be dealt with at some point), and vastly expands cylon options after revealing.
This was probably the best addition, but I wouldn't even call it an improvement, more of a "horizontal upgrade" where it's a new way to handle combat but not necessarily better. It's better than base games where the fleet attack crises cards were bunched up, but worse than games where they were probably spaced out. Once you realize how the new space board works, it becomes a simple matter of "gaming" it to easily keep the cylon fleet from becoming a threat (just keep a couple "pets" or one basestar around to prevent pursuit track).
The nebula addition is fun for experienced players who want a winner-takes-all endgame should the humans make it that far.
Good lord this was terrible. Collect tokens to represent how depressed characters are until they commit suicide and are permanently eliminated from the game? The whole ally system was complexity for complexity's sake, and seriously hindered the casual players from hopping on board after enjoying the base game. The only decent part about the nebula was the final fleet battle at the end, but there's no reason you couldn't just recreate that in the base rules. Every other addition seems like a roundabout, overly complex way of dealing with all the imbalances from Pegasus, namely executions. The final five cards are just dumb and arbitrary. Them and the personal goal cards were just means for humans to arbitrarily act like Cylons, where no amount of player deduction could distinguish the two (at least until everyone memorizes the goal cards; they're like the dumb cylon leader victory conditions in that regard). Then the characters. If they had a problem with executions then why did they add Cally? I don't think anyone playtested Tory. At all. In short: new space combat an alternative, but not necessarily superior. Throw in an end game space battle for the base game. Everything else: throw in bin next to New Caprica board. Honestly, simply throwing out all the stuff from Pegasus (mostly Caine and the Pegasus ship) solves a lot more problems than adding anything from Exodus.
