The expansion comes with every version of the game currently available
But I disagree that the assassin is inherently problematic, and would be unlikely to consider playing without him if I had the choice. If you have an issue with being killed, stop being so predictable. Otherwise, suck it up. Now, had you asked me after my first game where I got killed, robbed, and otherwise humiliated every single turn without fail, I probably would have agreed. But we had several key rules wrong (not least of which was the "can't be killed *and* robbed in one turn), and I was playing like a predictable idiot because I wasn't paying attention to the goals of the game vs the distractions along the way. That may not be true in your case, but in general I've found that if the game is well explained, even new players grasp the opportunity cost of assassinating/robbing and balance it with other options, or they end up getting destroyed in overall points at the end and learning after that first encounter. The exception would have been the 3 player game, except that the alternate rules I cited (I think) fix that by reinserting uncertainty with that extra character.
