Has this conversation already occurred? "Get rid of hitpoints"
A bizarre concept that's mutated wildly over the years. Originally: your guy was hit with an arrow, he's dead. Then: This guy here is tougher, it takes TWO arrows to kill him. Now we have guys in wowcrap who have thousands and thousands of hitpoints. Reading the old Dragon magazine articles about hitpoints, why a fighter gets more and what it means when he loses them, is pretty interesting. They're like fighting luck points to Gygax, totally unrelated to actual "damage". Anyway, one game I like, PARANOIA, went with an effects-based system. That guy is winged, his arm sucks now. That guy is incapacitated, he has to lie down now. Then mechanics of how likely a given weapon is vs a given armor to bring about those effects. I dunno, just saying, that seems more sensible to me. But then again, realism is the OPPOSITE of exciting fantasy, so maybe this is a terrible idea afterall. It's also very unclear how your priest is supposed to heal your tank before he lies down andMMOS ARE FUCKING GAY.
