Not to be a massive curmudgeon about this, but I think that your sense of what fictional characters fit what RPG roles is strongly colored by the fact that you have only played RPGs on a computer. There is nothing about the thief of Dungeons and Dragons that suggests Robin Hood. As of the 1st ed. Player's Handbook a thief can't even use a bow and are explicitly noted to tend towards an evil alignment. The whole thief as ranger-lite thing is basically a way around the inherent shortcomings of CRPGs. Unless your whole game is about stealth, it's hard to make a general case for using thieves' abilities. This doesn't matter when you have a human being who can adjudicate on the fly, but it basically makes a thief a glorified key ring that you have to protect in combat when your DM is a computer. To dodder even further into the old ways, the Greyhawk/1e PHB ranger isn't much like Robin Hood either. Instead, it's probably the second-most obvious case of Tolkein's influence on Gygax, because the class is clearly modeled on the Dunedain.
