MM is asking about things that were intended to be taken satirically but ended up being taken as straight, which is the literal opposite of <em>Starship Trooper</em>'s reputation; it looks like and was marketed as a standard 90s effects-heavy action blockbuster. Despite the fact that there is hardly an unironic moment in the film you weren't necessarily expected to recognize that on first viewing, which is true of every Verhoven film I can think of with the possible exception of <em>Showgirls</em>. He's the male-cinema equivalent of Douglas Sirk.[/quote]
