Re: You can *almost* do it in Fallout 3.

CON: Bethesda: just once, let me use my Science skill to turn on a backup generator so I can see where the fuck I'm going.
Funny you mention that. In Fallout 1 and 2, you could do that in several areas. Mr. Kool
There's a computer in the first metro station with commands for activating the lights, escalators, and robocops, but only the robocops work - the other two return error messages. I figured that meant I was going to have to use my repair skill on something down the line; I was envisioning rolling up my sleeves and going all MacGyver with some of this 200 pounds of junk I was carrying around. Nope! It was just "flavour text", to let me "taste the flavour" of what it's like to be someone who can turn on a light. They also sprinkled a few non-functional ladders around so you got the "flavour" of a world where people once climbed over minor obstacles, instead of taking endless detours through the goddamn metro system.
You switched complaints in mid sentence, it looks like. I presume the "minor obstacles" you're referring to are the collapsed buildings blocking the route to Rivet City. In real life, climbing over loose rubble is a good way to get buried or otherwise stuck in it and die. Not sure how a ladder would help you there. HOWEVER, I am hating the game a little bit when I queue up 50 shots in VATS only to see that my gun doesn't *quite* peak up above the thing I'm hiding behind, so all the shots go into that. That is my FAVORITE.
