Elemental: War of Magic

It's kind of a mess
It's trying to be more of an RPG strategy game (which I guess is what Heroes of Might & Magic was), and not vice-versa like MoM, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But, the UI is a clusterfuck (took me 5 minutes to figure out how to cast a spell), a lot of gameplay elements are totally unexplained and inexplicable, and it feels like it takes way too long to complete each turn. They finally broke down and made the tactical battles turn-based and MoM like. Except groups of soldiers act like one single bad-ass unit, instead of a squad of individuals. The factions all seem to be pretty much the same, but with some minor pluses or minuses. Your choice of race is Men, or Fallen. With like 5 different factions each. You can design your on Sovereign and Faction though. One of the Sovereign perks is a 3% chance to avoid defense ratings. 3%!!!!!. Lots of gameplay and AI bugs - my last game I was playing against Karavox, Karavox II, Karavox III. And their border/unit colors were the same as mine. They are however changing very many things with every patch, so there is still the possibility of something good coming out of it. Some things I do like: - As you research "Quest" technology it reveals more quest locations on the map, so you always have something to for your armies to do - Any equipment that you have unlocked from researching is available to purchase for your heroes (but the UI for buying and trading between heroes is terrible) - You design your own units - Your spell damage is multiplied by the # of magic shards (think MoM nodes) you control, so they are hugely important. Still no halfling slingers. :( Going to give it another try. On the plus side, there is some Qt3 drama involved in the release.
