(2:42:09 AM) Kered Curowdsongu: an ogre attacks my party and I move to grid 6 to counter (2:42:21 AM) Kered Curowdsongu: wait for his move
There's actually less waiting in a good turn-based game than in a bad real-time game like Dragon Age, because in a turn-based game you can finish making your decisions, hit "end turn", and almost immediately be back making MORE decisions. And any time the AI spends "thinking" is only going to result in more interesting behaviour than you'd get from one making decisions in real-time (such as, the decision to run right into your outstretched cone of cold). Grid-based movement also simplifies things like pathfinding and line-of-sight, allowing for even more advanced tactics from the CPU.
(2:43:21 AM) Kered Curowdsongu: but all turn based games will turn into "kill me i just want this to be over" really quick
I could "stand" here (I'm actually sitting BIG SURPRISE) and list all the board, card, and miniatures games that have more depth and better competitive scenes than any video game short of Street Fighter, but I don't want to waste my "breath" (I have a breathing condition, in case it wasn't obvious from all the talk of miniatures gaming).
(2:56:37 AM) Kered Curowdsongu: it gets really fucking boring using "tactics" against a horde of zombies or whatever
This is where a lot of turn-based RPGs fall down, and why it's so important for them to have "well-designed encounters with varied, intelligent enemies". GEE WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE?
