Oh also I played through Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
I didn't get deeply into it as a kid because it was too hard, but I liked it anyway. Since then, my childish incompetence has faded away, while my hunger for fanciful weapons that can be upgraded and eventually charged up has not changed at all. So now the game is just awesome. I'm sure it was awesome then as well, for SNES fans who were adults at the time (or just extraordinarily skilled and patient children). I think the genre was pretty well-developed back then. I loved the red demon. It has almost no AI, yet is very tricky to kill, and seems to actually want to play with you. It'll even stop inside a floor and do a silly dance while your shots fly harmlessly over it--and then, as soon as you finally maneuver one close to it, it'll dart out of the way. And if you just give up and try to scroll it off the screen, it'll erratically hop back into view, over and over, through half the stage, only to dive at you as soon as you stop to make a difficult jump or something.
