because I love books and hate reality. The problem is that academics have to deal with tons of reality in the form of labyrinthine bureaucracies so I sold out instead. I think that I would still prefer writing theory to code, but the pay is a lot better.
I went to grad school in philosophy, hoping to become an academic because that seemed like a pretty cushy gig and it was the only thing I'd ever been naturally good at without trying. The more academic philosophy I read, especially in "cognitive" "science", the more it started to feel like welfare for weenies too analytic to be artists and too lazy and/or self-involved to be scientists. And the job itself it's that hot either, unless you're one of the annointed few or you study under someone famous, you're basically guaranteed to get stuck teaching Intro to Critical Thinking at Podunk Midwest U forever, if you're lucky enough to even get a tenure-track position. After that I worked at a bookstore and pretended to be a writer, which comes in slightly ahead of "photographer" and "web designer" for bullshit careers you can pretend to do while smoking pot all day.
