Re: Dubai

Therefore, the second most important piece of information I have on Europe comes from the movie Hostel, where they demand passports in order to stay in the hostel. Does that ever happen? Do people in other countries actually ask to hold your passport for some shitty service?
Lots of countries. A bitch who ran a hotel in Hanoi refused to give me back my passport unless I bought a boat tour off her. They know you're fucked without your passport, but their problem is you're that badly fucked that you'll be on their case forever if you lose it, so it's not worth the few hundred dollars they could maybe make selling it. If they steal your wallet, you're going to freak out for a few hours, cuss a few people out, and then get on with your life. They think you've got travel insurance. That's probably how they justify it to themselves. Your wallet or you camera will probably be worth more to them, too. And they don't need special contacts to sell a camera. If they steal your passport, it's going to be a fucking huge pain in their ass, because you'll involve other foreigners, locals, diplomatic and police departments, etc... I fucking freak out when someone ransoms my passport and they always back down, unless it's a government official. Then it's out of my control and I just zone out and wait for their shift to finish. Long story short - it's not such a big deal handing some hateful little nigger your passport.
