"The thinking part of the brain!"
The idea that emulating a cortex is the most important part of modelling thought is totally retarded, and I would find it deeply disingenuous, but I'm pretty sure researchers like the ones in the article are totally fooling themselves too. Presumably the set of assumptions goes something like this: "Thinking is the most complicated mental activity, so once we've modeled it effectively, everything else will be trivial." The problem is that the complexity of thinking comes from factors totally external to the actual process which is relatively straightforward and computer-friendly. Getting together an enormous quantity of possible inputs and making a neural network powerful enough to process them and make decisions on the basis of them is awesome in both the literal and colloquial senses of the word, but it isn't anything like the mental processes of even the stupidest multicellular life.
