Re: Laptop recommendations?

-Firewire interface. Apparently they all have this now? The Presonus Firepod is 6-pin, and apparently all laptops have 4-pin, but there are adapters. I don't *think* it's bus-powered, trying to verify this.
They pretty much all do. You don't need any real adapter, just a cable with one small end and one big end, instead of a cable with two bigs.
-do Firewire ports differ on speed?
Yes. There's Firewire 400 and Firewire 800, the number being the Mbps. 800 is pretty new though, and not all that widespread. Most laptops will have 400.
So: please discuss. Brands? I have looked at Sony Vaios (the FS series is intriguing) and the Dell Warehouse store is selling some tricked out Inspirons for good prices. I've heard good things about Toshiba as well. Tech support is nice, any horror stories? I have maybe $1500 to spend. FoK
Based on the rest of what you wanted: Sager.
That's a brand I haven't heard much about. Have you had a good experience with them? The next step up (the $1800 one) has a really nice feature I hadn't heard of: a numeric keypad. That would be nice because so many apps use those numeric keypad keys as shortcuts.
Yes, Sager is fantastic. They're incredible machines, and they're one of the few laptop brands that actually *do* make for viable desktop replacement systems. As far as not having heard of the brand: Sager machines are actually the same as Alienware laptops. Both are made by some other company and rebranded by them, as well as a couple of other people. But Sager seems to be generally the cheapest, and they have pretty good support as well.
