Re: Nothing intelligent can ever be discussed at Caltrops.

Not as long as I'm here, bringing down the general level of discourse. What I want is a Wikipedia full of Caltrops posters,
Go make one. Wikipedia is fucking queer. We don't have enough content or posts to even warrant it. We're too incompetent to run for more than a couple of years without dying and losing all of our content anyway, and you want to overhaul the site for easy cross-referencing? Anyway, you totally missed the part where The Veronica Project was a black-bag covert op to subvert the growing demand for a Search feature. Who needs one now?
with everyone having the same ability to edit each others' posts
Wow, that's the worst idea I've heard ever.
and manifesting articles and forums alike in a conglomerate which individual users differentiate for themselves (this person answers "articles" with "articles," this other one uses "talk"; another posts "articles" and "talk" alike to "article" pages, etc. Articles branch off each other; people post reams of chat logs as addenda to articles or to comments of articles, etc. etc. etc.)
That sounds elaborate. We're caltrops; we don't do elaborate.
(But divide the articles into pages.)
Zseni likes the pages, got it.
If there were a Caltropsian wikipedia, my belief that Caltrops is an RPG would be fully implemented (forced on others) by turning content creation and forum chatter alike into a massive round of Nomic a la miasma, with video games and fag jokes as strange attractors. Instantly. Since all the rules would have to be made live and modified by those who follow them. The new forum overlord is not a person, it's the developing ruleset (weak, socially-enforced limiter) and the limitations of the technology at hand (strong arbitrary limiter.)
Yeah. That sounds pretty goddamned boring.
Well I'm just interested in seeing how the community develops itself. How quickly is it decided that there must be some unchangeable documents,
There won't be any, as long as you're here. And me. And Fussbett. And INC. And Creexul. And FABIO. And...
how soon will someone appoint himself to the office of sherrif,
"Himself." Enough with the coy pretense.
whether a decision is made to route around a crazy sherrif
Wonder who that is?
or to fall in under him, how interested people can stay in the political day-to-day, what gets fought over.
What caltrops needs: impetus to argue. I never knew.
Wikipedia supports itself (internally, as a group project or community) by having a purpose; cutting it loose from that purpose and the laws built up to protect that purpose would be an awesome spectacle of human behavior.
Yeah, too bad it'll never happen, whether the site was overhauled or not.
I got my panties in a wedge over the Purple Junta and the Crazy Admin; I have my panties in a wedge now that, because of the design and publishing structure, ICJ has to make time to make edits for people perfectly capable of editing their own articles. I won't be fully happy until there are no differences between forum and content besides self-assigned ones, and no differences between admin and user at all.
Warning us that you won't be happy unless Demand X is satisfied is quite simply the best way of guaranteeing X will never happen (in this case, it wouldn't, anyway).
Sticking points: someone has to be the site contact. The massiveness of the proposed system smothers itself without an actual purpose to inflate it.
Namely, anyone giving a shit. No, seriously. In truth, it is a pretty fanciful idea that would be dynamic and interesting if a)ICJ, ES, and CP had the time and energy to devote to it (which they don't, and to ask nay demand it of them is ridiculous) and b)the local gentry cared enough to buoy it. Realistically, we have neither. It's like Cabaret Voltron. You/I/We wanted prosaic deathmatches, we got mrs. johnson fic. But CV's set-up was a trifle, this is absurd.
People are generally content with the current system with ICJ as Real Admin and BDR in some nebulously threatening Forum Cop (stuffing donuts down his beleaguered craw, reading posts obsessively to justify his titular badge) role. Nothing intelligent can ever be discussed at Caltrops.
Yeah, yeah. Someday I'll slip up and make a threat maybe (which I suppose you're hoping for from the current BDR ator making its way around, whether it's you or not), and then you can reverse engineer this accusation. Although, I can still make out the faint S and B under the overwritten BDR, just so you know.
