The square formation is just embarassing
I mean, I've never really thought they've been able to get the tactical AI down pat in any of their games. If you take personal command of an army unless it's made up of militia and the Short Bus brigades you're going to win. The only reason Rome Total War still kicked my ass was because 5-6 battles per turn tends to wear you down with all the long loading screens. Similarly I use auto-resolve a lot in Empire Total War. Sometimes the auto-resolve will still surprise me and make me flip my keyboard (Your single fifth rate frigate sunk THREE of my fourth-rates before he was sunk? Really? REALLY?). Word to the wise: Save before every auto-resolved battle. The square formation thing is also absurd. Why you couldn't add a switch that says "If enemy army cavalry=0 DO NOT USE SQUARE FORMATION" Spanish Galleons also seem to be fucking bullshit. Like Fourth or Third rate stacks of guns at the beginning of the damn game, AND it can fucking run South American/African trade ports?! Fuck you, Spain! Playing the Dutch is a serious challenge, since their only special unit is a ridiculously overpriced trade ship with extra guns (and by extra I mean nowhere near that of a galleon). If you try to capture a galleon you'll probably lose 2-3 frigates in the process and you're guaranteed to make an enemy of them within the first 5 turns. Meanwhile Spain already has several trade ports in the Southern Hemisphere and as soon as you declare war it'll basically own that region with its galleons. I tried to wipe out a stack of them with a stack of fifth rates and lost half my ships. >:(
