Re: Ender's Game spoilers in MM's post!!!! And mine.

The appeal of Ender's Game is hard to explain. One of my personal thoughts is that people who love the book can really identify with Ender. When I read Ender's Game, I felt as if I was Ender. He is a child who is way above the level of all the other children in his school. He finds school extremely boring because he is never challenged (something a LOT of gifted and talented children identify with.)
Sorry it's gay but I have to rant about this. This myth (geniuses are bored in school because they aren't challenged) is one of the most destructive and devitalizing forces ever pressed upon the genuinely talented. Everyone is bored in school. EVERYONE. School is boring and hateful as all training camps for the status quo will be. It's just that geniuses hit the subject material checkpoints a little faster. It's a waste of their potential to not give them more challenging material, but that doesn't excuse them from having to do all the same shit that their less stimulating peers must do, which includes learning to deal with boredom and dumb people. And the idea that a really bright child must depend on some outside source to provide him with a challenge is p much summarily absurd. The nicest thing you can ever do to a really smart kid is to drop him off at the library with a note reading "when I get back, I expect you to tell me something interesting."
