That perhaps is a bit too subtle for you. Most of the Nazis in the film deserved to die. None of them deserved to be tortured, especially not the German army schmo who wouldn't REVEAL THE LOCATION OF HIS COMRADES SO THEY TOO COULD BE TORTURED AND THEN KILLED. He is beaten to death for this simple, extremely human act. Do you even remember that scene? Tarantino's films are psychopathic about portraying violence anyway. I gather that the Reader tried to portray even the Nazi murderers as ambiguously okay people. That I do find absurd. What I do have a problem with is that every German soldier = incarnation of evil. Most of them didn't even know that Jews were being put into ovens. Hell even Hitler's military tried to assassinate him, which tells you that a lot of people were totally not cool with what he was doing. Just because most of them kept their heads down because they didn't want to end up executed is not the essence of evil. You would probably do the same. Unfortunately this is an opinion that you are never supposed to hold in America. WW2 is the epic American myth that nobody is allowed to question.[/quote]
