There is a dodge move, I just remembered that. You do need to use it on the first boss. Just run right up to him and start attacking. He'll get hit a few times and then he'll block you and counterattack. Do a sideways roll to sidestep it. Repeat like 4 times and he's dead.
You must've played on easy, it takes about 20 times. Also, because of the camera, a side roll has like a 1/3 chance in being a backflip, which of course simply does not get you out of the way, first because it doesn't happen fast enough and second because it doesn't get you far back enough. Also you can't roll if you're attacking, you have to stop attacking first. Pretty much the same applies to the second boss. And then the Jester after that. The flying millipede is mostly fought with guns as far as I know. The boss fights are nowhere near as complicated or action packed as constant sword swinging, the majority of them are all about evading the boss attacks, then moving in, repeat. The second boss simply requires you to learn what attacks are going to go in what direction. It does get a little more complex when the boss hits about half health and does more attacks, but you just have to learn new boss attacks and how to avoid those instead. If they added an ability to parry boss attacks that would be cool. I don't really remember what game I'm thinking of that had boss fight variety like that. Actually I might be thinking of No More Heroes.
