The slow controls are also because you're doing it wrong.
Dante is slow at running and his standard attack is a little slow. He is not slow if you use combo attacks. The whole point of the game is to string combos together so that you're in a constant state of jamming swords into fuckin mowfs. If there is a moment where you are walking towards an enemy who has already attacked you, you are doing it wrong. What you really have to do in the original version of the game is play the first few levels several times until you have the double-jump and the sword rush. (I don't remember what they are called now because I beat this game when you were still just a mewling baby.) (So it might as well have been today but it was a few years ago). You want to play as Swordmaster the first time through because the fun weapon abilities are locked for the other styles. Later, to shake things up you might want to play as a gunslinger, but ultimately Swordmaster is more fun. The game really takes off when you have the dual fireswords and you're leveled up in Swordmaster style. At that point, it is nonstop carnage. The grim reaper boss from the 2nd stage is a regular foot soldier towards the end, and the attacks hurt just as much. It doesn't matter though because you only get hit if you fuck up.
