Indeed. Chris is the Western Invader and Sheva the coopted local elite
Just a little race humor there. Aha ha. Ha ha ha.
Two black guys dragging off a blonde wasn't imagery like making putting Leon in blackface would have been. There was NOTHING THERE to get upset about, unless suddenly you can't have black guys as villains in video games. Guess what, you can't have black guys as bad guys in video games any more.
That's simply not true, and an unfair characterization of the argument I was presenting. There is a long history of propaganda about white women being threatened by bestial black males, and I even referenced Birth of a Nation, available free online, so you could see the first time it was committed to moving pictures on a grand scale in service to an explicitly racist agenda. In this case, the savagery has more to do with the existing Umbrella etc mythology, and the random blond woman is probably exactly that, something they threw together with the standard Capcom respect for consistency and logic. But without seeing the context of the game, it seemed to exist within an even more "serious" attempt than RE4 in terms of theme and when that included all kinds of baggage like that it was quite natural to start asking questions. I know not everything is about the war, man, but the Blackhawk down vibe they seem to have been going for, coupled with first impressions like that initial moment when the town clears, made it seem like they were going for much more than an effort that would ultimately be punctuated by caricatures in grass skirts.
Capcom was right to stay silent on the issue, since video game journalism is a fucking joke. They aren't worth engaging in a dialog with.
In this case, "they" had something that was perfectly valid to ask, and it was a missed opportunity on Capcom's part to branch out from their proud naivete. "People", probably including "you", are perfectly willing to go in depth on thousands of different details of game mechanics at varying levels of depth and focus. Then you start vomiting furiously on everyone that tries to have a conversation about themes, stories, etc beyond the accepted existing categories that have been tossed about in game forums for years now. Your engagement with those topics is optional, and you shouldn't feel threatened by it.
