In which I court banning
[quote name="Mischief Maker"]Here are my original comments for posterity before icycalm goes through with a fine scalpel and changes all my references to "Mega Man" with "Rockman" (His name is Rock, his sister is Roll. DO YOU NOT SEE THE HIDDEN BEAUTY YOU STUPID FAT GAIJIN??!!!!!!) It is in response to a thread where icycalm says that Bangai O Spirits is a simple game for the foolish masses and his regulars fall over each other in their agreement and the one guy who meekly disagrees is banned. [quote name="Mischief Maker"]You are all fools. The point of Bangai O Spirits is not survival. Survival is the entry fee, and as you all acknowledged, a pretty low one at that. The purpose of the game is getting the highest score you can on the individual boards. There is this weird misconception that you must be a superplayer who can breeze his way through both loops of an arcade game in his sleep before you are allowed to try and play for score. Bullshit! You should play for score even if you can't clear the first level boss! Recently I came across a comment on the indie games blog where someone said that shmups have not changed much in the last twenty years. I was shocked by how silly the comment was, but upon reflection realized that if all you do is play for survival, they do blur together. Sure the graphics are different, sure sometimes you're fighting a little girl in a french maid's outfit instead of a gigantic megatank, but if all you want to do is survive, the name of the game is pretty much hide in the corner. Score is half the game in single player arcade games. Without score, why would anybody bother scraping bullets in a Shikigami or Shanghai Alice game? Why bother chaining kills in DoDonPachi or Patriot Dark? Who would take the risk of point-blank killing enemies in Ketsui or Blue Wish Resurrection? What do you care if you miss a bonus item in Dangun Feveron or Parsec 47? And yes, why bother color chaining in Ikaruga? Cut out the scoring, and all those very different games just muddle together into vague categories like "cave shmup." So you survived all 160 levels of Bangai O Spirits? Great. You now have 160 starting points to pace yourself towards getting a real score. "Treasure syndrome" is not saying Ikaruga is a great game. "Treasure syndrome" is someone who doesn't play shmups saying Ikaruga is the greatest shmup ever designed and is head and shoulders above all the other games in its genre because, woah, there's this whole scoring system that gives the game hidden depth and replayability.
