You misunderstand why I think Datsuns are rare

Well this is my point -- the only people driving antique cars are enthusiasts, ex-mechanics, and your mom.
I want to see the meeting of first-generation Nissan Pulsar enthusiasts. On second thought, no I don't. Does this guy EVEN know what a goldmine he's sitting on?! Still, I can kinda guess how your thought process worked here: "I know what I paid for a worn-out denim jacket at one of Toronto's many fine vintage clothing stores, imagine how much a worn-out CAR from the same period must be worth!"
I'm not saying enthusiasts and mechanics drive antique cars because they're expensive, but because they're beyond the scope of a normal person to maintain. Which you then go into detail on...

So once the junkman locates a 1979 Datsun distributor...
I'm going to (retroactively) stop you right there. Junkmen don't "locate" parts unless there's real money in it for them. Usually, they just give you some vague directions, then you have to walk around, find the car you're looking for, take out the part you need, and bring it back to the office to check out.
...does he install it too?
No. That's something you do, generally in the parking lot. If you fuck something up or just get too frustrated, take advantage of the fact you're already at a junkyard and walk away!

So you're telling me when your mom's Datsun needs a new part she... Goes to a junkyard. Finds the correct part. Possibly removes it from an old(er) Datsun? Brings it to her car in the parking lot (fortunately it didn't need a tow) and installs it. Like, she pulls out a socket wrench set? Or whatever the poor equivalent is? ("Wrench"?) Perhaps she has an '81 Datsun 310 repair manual to guide her? Now I look stupid for questioning this. I want to assume that her Forza 2-loving son might help her on the junkyard missions, but the last time he went to the junkyard he shook so badly the tray of nuts and bolts he was carrying ended up all over the ground!
