This is an interesting hypothesis!
I have no problem buying coffee but I get nervous as shit about buying music from hip record stores! I also basically stopped reading fiction because I couldn't bring myself to buy the pulpy horror stuff I'd actually read, and instead bought unreadable brainy stuff that people on the internet recommended (<i>A Confederacy of Dunces</i>). You'd think that Amazon would make this easier but it's actually worse: it puts you in the situation of grimly judging *yourself* on your past purchases because it tells you what people like you - YOU PEOPLE - buy: <img src="http://content.screencast.com/users/BachelorMachines/folders/Jing/media/9f7e1d49-6d45-4343-86fe-b1d26c1d70bc/2009-05-15_2148.png" /> As you can see there's a lot of baby shit on there but it's obviously because I bought some baby books and/or childproofing stuff. I think I'm looking pretty good here. The Death Cab recommendation is troubling but I can chalk that up to Amazon not being indie enough to cater to my tastes (CHRISTGAU). More problematic is the size of the word "Unisex." I might have to buy some more stuff until Unisex is smaller. Related: I found that I can rent the movies that my wife and I will both watch if I also rent something that a guy would never, ever watch (say, a season of Gray's Anatomy), because that shows the clerk that there's a woman out there who I am also renting for. So here's a thing: Maybe Jerry could go in and buy TWO coffees! Or a coffee and a water! Then it anybody's guess whether he even likes coffee. He might just be a good guy. A guy whose friend is waiting!
