I installed an emulated version of this. by Fullofkittens 01/07/2009, 9:59am PST Kids these days who complain about video games having fucked up learning curves (*cough*) have no concept of just how punishingly tough a game can be. The manual for The Bard's Tale states that you shouldn't get attached to lvl 1 and 2 characters, and they're not kidding. "You face certain death in the form of 3 spiders and 2 nomads!" is not a joke. I had forgotten about this part of the game: my lvl 1s are getting CRUSHED by the random encounters. Other things I had forgotten about: -Hitting esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6-esc-6 until I finally see a warrior that has 19 hit points, 18 dexterity, and 18 strength. It's suicide to go out there with less! Then repeat the exercise for every other character. I just remembered that my elementary school friend and I would set aside special sessions to roll up survivable characters. -Walking around the temple square in desperation, hoping to scrounge up enough cash to get the healers to heal up a damaged party member. This, 20 years before America's health care crisis! I'm already re-obsessed with this game.
