TIP: When you see Jonathan Mak about to speak, you SCRUB FOR YOUR LIFE by Fussbett 06/25/2008, 2:14am PDT
Scrub forward anytime "Everyday Shooter" Mak is on camera if you don't want to start punching your monitor. Mak's pretentious purist indie developer savant routine wears thin quickly. I can't believe he's allowed to sit at the same table as someone who worked on Blasto. And Erik Wolpaw.

If you're tight for time, the best Erik story is probably at 18:00, on the subject of Focus Testing. He recalls the Psychonauts years at Doublefine and slowly the story spirals farther and farther until it finally ends at "the worst experience of my life". It's a good thing the tale is safely behind a moat of 18 mostly boring minutes and lots of Jonathan Mak being a fag, because that sound bite is a real blow to the Doublefine hiring process.

Immediately after the playtesting story, Mak doesn't understand "conflicts" in relation to game development. "What do you mean conflicts?" Dylan Cuthbert then literally explains conflict to him: "One person wants to do one thing, another person wants to do another." Mak still doesn't get it. Don't you all just follow what the director says?

INC: knitting games. great.
INC: any thoughts on big budget movies, Mak?
INC: wow, this guy needs 8000 face punches
Sanitario666: I'm guessing Everyday Shooter is making him a tonne of money to be this much of a dick.
Sanitario666: I like how Erik finally summarizes that Doublefine playtesting was the worst experience of his life
Sanitario666: Haha afterwards, Mak says he doesn't even playtest.
INC: yeah
INC: he makes it for himself
INC: then looks up for the approving gazes he knows are coming
Sanitario666: And then they talk about conflicts in the office, making a game.
Sanitario666: Mak: Conflicts? What do you mean?
Sanitario666: He's never worked a day in his life.
INC: god, wouldn't be great if Erik said, "Pardon me for saying this, but what the fuck are you talking about?"
INC: oh you weren't kidding about conflicts!
INC: haha
INC: someone should demonstrate a physical conflict to him
INC: haha, Erik saying there are only so many auteurs that are worth following
Sanitario666: MIYAMOTO... NOT JONATHAN MAK
INC: you can see the thought balloon above Mak's head "I'm on that list."
