The defendant didn't even bother to show up. A bench warrant was issued for his apprehension, but that was done last time he didn't show up too - he still hasn't spent a day in jail. I think I torpedoed our case by getting the dates confused. The prosecutor gave me my statements from Aug 12 and... 20-somethingth? I should probably know that... and told me to prepare. Then the other, younger, female-er, visible-minority-er prosecutor he passed the case off to this morning when he realized he had a scheduling conflict asks me about June fucking 7th. So of course like an idiot I launch into the events of Aug 12.
She looks scared and tries to signal me with ridiculous facial contortions but I just chalk that up to this being probably her first day on the job. Then she tells the judge to put our shit on pause and runs out of the room. For the twenty-minutes she's gone the very old, very white, very expensive opposing council won't shut up, "she isn't going to learn how to do her job on some legal help website!" "looks to me like Mr. Whorebach is jury fodder if ever I've seen it ^_^" and, I swear to God, "let's release Mr. Whorebach so he can discuss this with his mum WHO HE LIVES WITH"
Never answer a subpoena. You get treated like shit in an ugly government building with no air conditioning. They will threaten to compel you but, according to the cute blonde cop waiting next to me, THEY NEVER ACTUALLY DO FOR PIDDLY CHARGES LIKE ASSAULT AND B&E.
Time to put on my shit-eating grin. I'll let you know how this turns out. |
