The problem is, Forza simulates a sport that not many people care about. So while Madden might have no trouble selling five million copies to football fans, Forza has to cast its net a little wider than auto racing enthusiasts and reach out to regular gamers, too. And if there's one trait that characterizes gamers, it's their love of progress, and their willingness to put up with literally any amount of unfun bullshit to get it. That's why Forza includes all your favourite RPG elements:
- unlocking unlockables
- leveling up
- collecting them all
And enough driving aids to make the gameplay in World of Warcraft look like fucking Virtua Fighter. There's a one-button mode that takes care of everything except steering and acceleration, and a rewind feature in case you can't even manage that. This is why critics and gamers love the Forza series, because you start out in the shittiest car imaginable and "earn", purely as a result of time sunk, the priviledge of driving a seemingly-endless series of progressively less terrible cars, eventually culminating in the fastest closed-wheel vehicles on the planet. It has nothing to do with how much fun the respective cars are to drive (especially since what they're doing can barely be described as driving anyway) and everything to do with being Rewarded for your Time and Effort.
The upside, for fans of auto racing, is getting to play a simulation of your unpopular niche sport made with the budget of a five-million seller. Once you turn off all the assists, it's actually pretty fucking good! The downside, of course, is having to EARN the right to play with all the cars and tracks you already paid for. But if you play games at all, you're already all-too familiar with that process. |
